VOCABULARY & EXPRESSIONS

Go over the following vocabulary and expressions with your tutor. Read the word/expression and definition out loud, and your tutor will go over anything you do not understand. Practice creating a sentence or two to make sure you know how to use the word/expression properly.


Vocabulary/ Expressions


accommodation: (noun)

 a room or building in which you stay during holidays or live.

While I'm traveling, my favorite types of accommodation are hotels.

to book (something):(Verb Phrase)

 to arrange and confirm a place on a flight, a room in a hotel, or a ticket for an event in the future.

If you book your plane tickets in advance, they will be much cheaper.

breathtaking view: (noun)

an amazing view.

I’ve seen many breathtaking views during my journey to Paris.

far-off destination: (noun)

a distant place.

Australia is a far-off destination, nonetheless, I want to visit it.

getting away from it all:(Verb Phrase)

 escaping in order to rest from a daily routine.

After I passed my exams, I wanted to get away from it all for at least a couple of days.

go off the beaten track: (Verb Phrase)

to visit an uncommon place.

Unlike my brother, I prefer to go off the beaten track.

head for: (Verb Phrase)

go in a direction for.

I’m heading for France for my next holidays.

 local crafts:(noun)

 things made in the region.

My sister bought some amazing local crafts on her trip to India.

out of season:  (noun)

not within the main holiday period.

I decided to go on a journey with my friends out of season.

passport control: (noun)

a place where you get your passport checked.

I spent a few hours waiting in line on passport control.

places of interest:  (noun)

memorable and honorable places.

My native city has a variety of places of interest.

short break: (noun)

a little holiday.

My father had a short break this year, I hope he’ll be able to relax some more.

to go sightseeing: (Verb Phrase)

to go visiting sights of interest.

Today we went sightseeing with my friends.

to travel on foot/horse: (Verb Phrase)

to travel in a specific way, usually in local areas.

When I'm in a small town I prefer to travel on foot.

to travel by bus / plane / car / bicycle / motorcycle: (Verb Phrase)

A way of traveling.

Although I usually travel by car, when I decided to visit Paris I had to travel by plane.

tourist attractions:(noun)

 places which tourists tend to visit.

Despite not being a tourist attraction, the new fountain is a very popular place for the youth. 

hostel: (noun)

a cheap hotel.

During our trip, we stayed in a hostel, because we didn’t have enough money for a hotel.


PART 1 QUESTIONS

Introduction and interview (4-5 minutes) 

Here are possible questions that might come up during the test. Go over them with your tutor.

In the first part, the examiner will ask you a number of general questions 

Let's talk about traveling 

Do you like to travel?

What kind of places have you visited in your life?

Which place would you really like to visit again? Why?

What’s the best place you’ve ever visited?


Let's talk about how you travel

How do you prefer to travel on long journeys?

Do you think your hometown is a good place for a holiday? Why do you say that? 

What would you recommend that tourists do there?

Is it common in your country to go exploring in your country?


Let's talk about adventures

Are you an adventurous person?

When was the last time you went on an adventure and where did you go?

What was the most amazing adventure you have been on?

Are there dangerous areas in your country where you should not venture into?


PART 2 QUESTIONS

Individual long turn (3-4 minutes) 

Here are possible questions that might come up during the test. Go over them with your tutor.

You will have 1 minute to prepare to speak, and then you will talk for 2 minutes, during which the examiner will not speak. 


Sample: A

Describe an interesting journey you have been on. 

You should say:

where you went

how you traveled there

who you went with and say how it affected your life at the time


Sample B

Describe the most adventurous person you know. 

You should say:

Why you think this person is adventurous

What types of activities this person does

How you came to know this person and if you regard yourself as adventurous as well. 


Sample C

Describe a tourist attraction you once visited. 

You should say:

When you visited it

Where is it situated

Who you went with and say what about it you like the most

 

PART 3 QUESTIONS

Two-way discussion (4-5 minutes) 

Here are possible questions that might come up during the test. Go over them with your tutor.

 In the last part, you will talk with the examiner about issues related to the topic on the card.

How has traveling changed, compared to the last few decades?

When  people travel (as tourists), who do they usually go with?

Do you think travel can  change people’s ways of thinking?

What are the advantages of traveling?

What do you think are the impacts of tourism in your country?

Do you think there are also negative impacts of tourism?

What kinds of tourists are likely to visit your country in the future?

Is cycling very popular in your city?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of cycling in the city?

What are the benefits of having a good public transportation system in a city?

How will transportation in cities change in the future?


WRAP-UP

Go over any new expressions or vocabulary that you learned today.
