VOCABULARY & EXPRESSIONS

Go over the following vocabulary and expressions with your tutor. Read the word/expression and definition out loud, and your tutor will go over anything you do not understand. Practice creating a sentence or two to make sure you know how to use the word/expression properly.

Vocabulary/ Expressions

athletics track (running track):  (noun) 

a track for running, usually used for athletic races 

The 9-lane running track is equipped to cope with competitions of all levels.

blow the competition away: (verb Phrase)

win easily the competition.

After training for seven years, he blew the baseball competition away.

brisk walk (brisk walking): (noun) 

a sport in which people walk fast, but not as fast as a full run.

Brisk walking is a great exercise for those, who want to lose weight.

to build muscle: (verb)

to gain muscle mass.

John was very skinny five years ago, but now he has built muscle and looks really strong.

fitness program: (noun) 

 a timetable of activities to keep you in good shape.

I need a fitness program to keep me up to date with my sports schedule.

A personal trainer (sports coach): (noun) 

a person that helps you to train on a one-to-one basis.

It's much easier to train with a sports coach than alone.

sports center (fitness center): (noun) 

a specific building where people can do different sports.

I practice running at a local sports center.

sports facilities: (noun) 

the equipment and services needed to do a sport.

I chose this gym because it offers a wide range of sports facilities.

sports meeting (athletics meeting): (noun) 

an event at which a number of athletic contests are held.

The next athletics meeting will be held in November and will include javelin, pole vault, hurdles, and steeplechase.

squash/tennis/badminton court: (noun) 

the surface where you play these sports.

I love playing tennis with my friends at the tennis court. 

strength-training strategy: (noun) 

a set of exercises to build muscles.

My dad advised me of a wonderful strength-training strategy.

strenuous exercise: (noun) 

exercise that needs a lot of physical effort.

It is recommended to drink a lot of water after strenuous exercises.

Passive sports: (noun) 

 watching, looking at, or listening to sports rather than doing it physically.                                                  

I am not a fan of passive sports as I enjoy being actively involved.


PART 1 QUESTIONS

Introduction and interview (4-5 minutes) 

Here are possible questions that might come up during the test. Go over them with your tutor.

In the first part, the examiner will ask you a number of general questions 

  • Do you like to watch sports on TV?

  • Do you play any sports?

  • Do you have a favorite sports star?

  • What are the most popular sports in your country?


  • What kind of sports would you like to try in the future?

  • Have you ever tried any dangerous sports?

  •  Why do some people like water sports?

  • Are men and women good at the same types of sports?


  • What sports do children prefer?

  • Do you like to do daily exercise? (Why?/Why not?)

  • Do you think playing sports will still be popular in the future?

  • What are your thoughts on E-games, and how popular are they in your country?


PART 2 QUESTIONS

Individual long turn (3-4 minutes) 

Here are possible questions that might come up during the test. Go over them with your tutor.

You will have 1 minute to prepare to speak, and then you will talk for 2 minutes, during which the examiner will not speak. 

Part 2 – sample task card


Sample A

Describe a sportsperson you admire.

 You should say:

  • who the person is

  • what sport he or she does

  • when did you first hear about this person and why you admire him or her.


Sample B

Describe a game or sport you enjoy playing. 

You should say:

  • What sport/game it is

  • How often you get to play this sport/game

  • When you usually play this sport/game

  • Where you can play this sport/game

  • Who you play this sport/game with, and why you like it so much.


Sample C

Describe a sport you would like to learn. 

You should say:

  • what the sport is

  • when you want to learn it

  • how you would learn it

  • and why you want to learn it


PART 3 QUESTIONS

Two-way discussion (4-5 minutes) 

Here are possible questions that might come up during the test. Go over them with your tutor.

 In the last part, you will talk with the examiner about issues related to the topic on the card.


  • What types of sports are popular in your country?

  • What are the benefits of playing a sport?

  • Do you think the types of sport that are popular will change in the future?

  • How can sports bring people from different countries closer together?

  • What are the advantages of hosting different international sporting events in a country?

  • How can we encourage children to participate in different types of sporting activities?

  • Why do you think sport is important?

  • Do you think famous sportspeople are good role models for children?

  • Do you agree that sports stars earn too much money?

  • How can parents encourage their children to do more sports?

  • Is there a sport that’s more popular with girls than with boys?

  • Do children get enough exercise these days?

WRAP-UP 

Go over any new expressions or vocabulary that you learned today.
