Learning Objectives

In this lesson you will:

  • Practice Discussion questions based on the IELTS topic

  • Create sentences related to the IELTS topic, and also practice paraphrasing

  • Practice answering IELTS Part 1 questions using the A R/E method. 

  • Prepare and answer  Part 2 questions using some helpful language as a guide. 

  • Lastly, we will practise answering Part 3 questions using the A R/E A method. 

  • We will then end the class with some feedback and a Homework Task.

NB:

  • Please remember to always bring a pen and paper to take notes. (especially for part 2).

 

Exercise 1

VOCABULARY & EXPRESSIONS

Go over the following vocabulary and expressions with your tutor. Read the word/expression and definition out loud, and your tutor will go over anything you do not understand. Practice creating a sentence or two to make sure you know how to use the word/expression properly. Also Practice paraphrasing and finding synonyms by paraphrasing at least two of the example sentences, as this will help you in all parts of the IELTS test.

Vocabulary/ Expressions

A night owl: (idiom)

Meaning: A person who prefers to be awake and active at night

Example: My wife’s a night owl, but I like to be in bed by 10 o’clock.


A white night: (idiom)

Meaning: A sleepless night.

Example: I had a white night because of a stomach ache.


Not slept a wink: (idiom)

Meaning:If you haven’t slept a wink you haven’t had any sleep

Example: I wasn’t able to sleep a wink with all that noise outside.


Tossing and turning: (idiom)

Meaning:If you toss and turn all night, sleep restlessly. You reposition yourself continuously in an attempt to fall asleep.

Example: Every night I toss and turn until just a few hours before I’m supposed to wake up.


To fall asleep: (verb phrase)

Meaning: To begin sleeping

Example: I’d better get out before I fall asleep.


Burn the midnight oil: (idiom)

Meaning: If you burn the midnight oil, you work until very late at night. It comes from the idea of using an oil lamp.

Example: He regularly burns the midnight oil when he has to study for a test.


Conscious: (adjective)

Meaning: Awake, thinking, and knowing what is happening around you

Example: I just closed my eyes for a few seconds to rest, but I was still conscious of all that was happening around me.


Worn out:(Phrasal verb)

Meaning: Extremely tired

Example: They were worn out after their long walk.


Sleep like a rock:(idiom)

Meaning: To experience a very deep and restful sleep; to sleep soundly.

Example: I have to set numerous alarms for the morning because I sleep like a rock every night!


Drowsy: (adjective)

Meaning: Feeling like you want to go to sleep. Often it’s used when it’s not the usual time to go to sleep.

Example: Some medicines make you feel drowsy.


Sleep deprived: (adjective)

Meaning:If you’re sleep deprived, you’re suffering from a lack of sleep.

Example: Students are often sleep deprived because they have to start their day so early.


Drained: (Verb)

Meaning: Very exhausted / tired, or depleted / drained of energy.

Example: After a long day playing sports, I felt very drained and went to bed early.


Nod off:(Phrasal verb)

Meaning: To begin sleeping, especially not intentionally

Example: After our busy day, we both sat and nodded off in front of the TV.


Head off: (Phrasal verb)

Meaning: If you head off you start a journey or leave a place or start to go to sleep.

Example: What time are you heading off to bed, as you have a busy day tomorrow?



Exercise 2

Useful Language

Listen and repeat these phrases with your tutor. You can use these phrases in your answer.

- That’s an interesting question!

- Well, let’s see. Let me think for a minute.

- Let me just try to work out the best way to answer that question.

- What a good question! I’ve never really thought about that before.

PART 1 QUESTIONS 

Introduction and interview (4-5 minutes)

Here are possible questions that might come up during the test. Go over them with your tutor.

In the first part, the examiner will ask you a number of general questions


  • How many hours do you sleep every day?

  • What does a good night's sleep mean to you?

  • Do you think sleep is important?

  • Do you like to get up early in the morning?


  • What time do you usually go to sleep? What time do you usually get up?

  • Do you ever have a nap during the day?

  • Do you think sleeping in the afternoon can help improve your work?

  • Do you think the older people get, the longer they  need to sleep? Why?


  • How have your sleep patterns changed since you were a child?

  • Do you ever sleep in, for example on the weekends?

  • Why do some people sleep well while other people do not sleep well?

  • What do you do when you have trouble sleeping?

  • Have you ever slept in a strange place that was not a bed?


Exercise 3

PART 2 QUESTIONS

Individual long turn (3-4 minutes)

Here are possible questions that might come up during the test. Go over them with your tutor.

You will have 1 minute to prepare to speak, and then you will talk for 2 minutes, during which the examiner will not speak.  

Sample A

Describe a time when you were tired but had to stay awake.

You should say:

  • Where you were

  • What you were doing

  • Why you were sleepy

  • What you did to stay awake

 

Sample B

Describe a time you had the best sleep.

You should say:

  • When this was

  • What you did before you went to bed

  • Why this was the best sleep ever

  • What your thoughts about this was and if you experienced the same sleep ever since.


Exercise 4


PART 3 QUESTIONS

Two-way discussion (4-5 minutes) 

Here are possible questions that might come up during the test. Go over them with your tutor.

 In the last part, you will talk with the examiner about issues related to the topic on the card.

  • Do you think people get enough sleep nowadays?

  • Are there any situations when people are tired but they have to stay awake?

  • What can a person do to not fall asleep? 

  • What are the benefits of napping?

  • Does a person’s age influence the amount of sleep they need? 

  • Does working at night have an impact on a person’s sleep patterns?
