In a previous lesson, we studied the first two parts of a basic SVC sentence: the subject and the verb. In this lesson, we will cover the last part. This will allow you to provide more kinds of information about a subject.

Subject Complement


The subject complement is the last part of the sentence "I am a cook". Subject complements provide information about the subject.


These are the kinds of subject complements we can put after the verb 'be':

1. Nouns

  • We are students.
  • They are doctors.
  • You are children.
  • It is a dog.

2. Adjectives

  • They are happy.
  • He is sick.
  • We are American.
  • It is red.

3. Prepositional phrases (phrases that include prepositions such as at/in/on)

  • She is at home.
  • The concert is in the park.
  • The apple is on the table.
