DIALOGUE

In this lesson, your tutor will help you go over this topic: checking in at the airport. First, read the following dialogue out loud with your tutor, then switch roles and try again.

Emily and Devin are talking about checking in at the airport.

Emily: Devin! I’m so excited because I will be traveling to Miami next month! This will be my first time flying.

Devin: Wow! Did you buy your ticket yet?

Emily: Yes! Can you let me know what to expect when I check-in at the airport?

Devin: I suggest you arrive at the airport 2 hours prior to your departure time.

Emily: Ok! What should I expect at the ticket counter?

Devin: They will ask you for your ID and tell you the approximate arrival time.

Emily: What about my carry-on?

Devin: I recommend that you put a suitcase tag on all your baggage. Also, they might check the size and weight.

Emily: Thanks! Will they give me my boarding pass at this time also?

Devin: Yes, they will. They will also tell you which gate the plane will depart from. Have a safe trip!

VOCABULARY

check-in

(v phrase) to register at a hotel or airport
You need to check-in two hours before your flight.

departure time

(n) the time a plane will leave the airport
The departure time is scheduled for 3:00 PM.

ticket counters

(n) the place where a person registers for travel
Ticket counters are located inside the airport.

ID

(n) short for identification; a card or document that contains your name and other information about you (passport, drivers license, etc.)
You need to show your ID to go through security.

arrival time

(n)the hour or time you will appear at a destination
The arrival time is scheduled for 9:00 PM.

baggage

(n) suitcases, bags, backpacks, or luggage with your clothing and other personal items
Your baggage will be put on the airplane after check-in.

carry-on

(n) a bag, backpack, or suitcase that is allowed to be taken on the airplane with you
You are allowed one carry-on when you board the plane.

suitcase tag

(n) a plastic, metal, or paper label with your contact information (ex. name, home address, email address, and phone number)
You should always put suitcase tags on your bags when traveling.

boarding pass

(n) a document one must have to enter an airplane for a flight
A boarding pass is required at security.

gate

(n) an area where people enter an airplane or train for departure
You will be departing from gate A7.

EXERCISE

Practice answering the following questions with your tutors. You can use the sample answers to come up with your own answer.

Which do you like, a window or aisle seat on an airplane?

Do you like to check in your bags at the ticket counter or take them with you on the plane?
