DIALOGUE

In this lesson, your tutor will help you go over this topic: Living Abroad. First, read the following dialogue out loud with your tutor, then switch roles and try again. 

Emily and Devin are talking about what it’s like to live in another country.


Emily:  Devin, do you like living abroad in Tokyo?

Devin:  I love it, but it took me several months to adjust. to living here

Emily:  I can imagine! What was the most difficult thing for you?

Devin The Culture shock was the most difficult for me, and I am still trying to adjust!

Emily:  I’m sure it took a while to get used to Tokyo. What do you think about the food?

Devin:  I love Japanese cuisine. It’s delicious!

Emily:   I love Japanese food also. How is the cost of living?

Devin:The cost of living is similar to San Francisco.

Emily:I see. Are the people friendly and kind?

Devin:The people are friendly. However, I can’t speak their language well so I struggle to meet new friends.

VOCABULARY

abroad

(adv) in a foreign country; away from one’s home

He lived abroad in Japan for three years.


adjust

(v) to adapt or become used to a new situation

He needs to adjust to living in Japan.


imagine

(v) a mental picture of a situation

Can you imagine what it’s like to live abroad?


culture shock

(n) a feeling of confusion felt by someone living in another country or place they don’t know

It was a real culture shock to live in a big city.


used to

(adj) to become familiar with something so it seems normal

She’s not used to driving the car.


cuisine

(n) food cooked in a certain way, especially of a specific country

We spent the day tasting the local cuisine of Japan.


cost of living

(n) the average price of food, clothing, and other services to live somewhere

The cost of living in London is high.


similar

(adj) almost the same as someone or something else

The two houses are similar.


however

(adv) to introduce a statement that is different than something said before

She needs to study. However, she doesn’t have enough time.


struggle

(v) to try hard to do something that is difficult or causes problems

He struggles with learning English.

Use the following questions as a guideline to form an interesting conversation with your tutor. Feel free to diverge from these suggestions if anything interesting comes up.

  4. Is it easy for you to make new friends? Why or why not?
  5. What would you miss about your home country while living abroad? Why?
